The real reasons Cantor lost? He thought he had the primary won after that McLaughlin poll and went back to talking about an immigration compromise after saying the issue was frozen for the year. Even though immigration clearly needs reform, Cantor’s decision to talk about it so openly after saying he wouldn’t made it clear to his district that he was not being honest with them. And when Cantor realized people were annoyed with him, he launched a crop of very nasty attack ads aimed at David Brat, ads hostile enough to make it look like Cantor was afraid of Brat. This of course made Brat more credible in the eyes of those who wanted Cantor gone.

Arrogance, dishonesty, and then vitriol and panic did in Eric Cantor politically.
