I remember in the 2000 election, a very homophobic friend insisting to me that women would favor Bush over Gore because Bush was more “attractive.” I wouldn’t call GWB ugly but I do think Gore probably was the more handsome of the two men running. I think Truman had a nice quote though. He was saying that Franklin Pierce was probably our best looking president but as President, he was bad as Coolidge and Buchanan. Meanwhile Lincoln, a man who Southern papers and even his own General McClellan likened to an ape was probably our best. The last part is my attribution, Truman never talked about Lincoln’s looks in the quote just Pierce so it’s clear.
