Because it’s a choice of language and identification. The choice between the three terms is mainly a regional thing. It’s a lot like soda vs cola vs coke here in the US.

You probably wouldn’t use in a neutral, say, statistical report “soda” for some areas and “coke” for others, as separate categories, meaning the same substance. You would use one, or another, or a third, more formal term.

Whereas typhoon, cyclone and hurricane will all be used in the same report, the only diff. being where the event happens. You being or not being from that region would play no role. So it’s exactly this non-regional use of “regionalized” terms that got me interested.

But I just remembered another thing that can serve as a true analogy: astronauts, cosmonauts and taikonauts. Same thing, traditionally different terms.
