The effect of a harsh reality check when it goes from that rosy dream state to total war in a matter of … what was it? Weeks? Months?
Over a year. The official acknowledgement that the Battle of Stalingrad had been a major defeat and Goebbels calling for total war wasn’t until Feb ‘43, but Hitler wouldn’t allow him to actually start drawing men and materiel from the non-essential sectors of the German economy until July ‘44.
