See, this is why they need to teach Latin in high school again. So that we can all know that e.g. is short for exempli gratia (“for the sake of an example”) and i.e. for id est (“that is”).

It’s also an enormous help in spelling.

Yes, I think it would be helpful to learn the rudiments of language, very helpful indeed. While I didn’t take Latin, I was taught by nuns in elementary school who probably had, and English was always my best subject. Plus, the Mass was still celebrated in Latin back then and I did learn a bit of it just from that.

But people always gripe about having to learn a “dead” language, so that will never fly. Latin still figures in the professions, though. Even though language “lives” and changes, it has roots which carry forward. Linguistics is a very interesting subject.
