My working hypothesis: The boys walking in the middle of the street held up the police car from going somewhere. This pissed off Officer Wilson, who was further enraged when their response to his rude request wasn’t an immediate “yes sir”. Assuming he did hit himself with the door, that would only make things worse, at which point he was in a killing rage, firing wildly until Brown stopped, at which point he took aim and unloaded the clip in a furious outburst.

If a cop told me “GET THE FUCK ON THE SIDEWALK!!!” I would’ve told him “I pay your salary, try again.”
