Hoops, you know I’m a total, cold-as-the-grave atheist, and I love the prayer list.

Not because it’s religious.

But because it’s human.

My heart lifts when I hear gospel music. I sing “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlmen” to myself at Christmas. I love cathedrals. I say “bless you”. I think the poetry contained in the Bible and the book of common prayer. I have felt at my most peaceful inside a Taoist temple.

I just don’t believe it has meaning outside the human meaning— which encompasses all of us.

Just a side note.

“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” is the correct title. As in, God rest you happy, my friends. It has nothing to do with merry gentlemen and everything to do with God making the gentlemen merry.

Just sayin’.
