When I was a kid I hated Germany; I’ve since come to admire them.

Of all the countries in the world who ever committed great atrocities, all the nations with ugly chapters in their history (which means pretty much every nation that was ever powerful, right? And some that weren’t) — Germany is the only one that really faced up to what they did. They’re the only ones who ever took a good hard look at what they’d done, and made a sustained, concerted effort to change themselves into a people who could never again give even a moment’s thought to doing something even remotely similar.
