People don’t take precautions in a panic. People do stupid crazy shit in a panic, like threatening people’s lives, believing in crazy cures and buying all the toilet paper.

I still remember when I was Kingman, AZ trying to track down Tim McVeigh’s buddies in the weeks after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. The rumor spread that Clinton was bringing in 100,000 Chinese shock troops in black helicopters to “liquidate” the locals because Democrats=Commies.

The local supermarkets sold out of bottled water, canned food and ammunition in an afternoon.

I always suspected that it was a savvy supermarket manager wanting to move some inventory behind these rumors.
