They are smart about that but there’s not enough effort to educate their base or eject the lost causes. Leaving these problems to fester can cause problems in the future. The conservatives never really got rid of the John Birch society or paleocons like Buchanan and they are now paying the price.

Who would you regard as the left-wing version of Buchanan or the JBS?

(And, to be fair, I think people actually thought the JBS was dead until quite recently.)
