Another way to look at it is like this:

Imagine that you have two widgets that will snap together and hold if you can get them close enough to snap them together. Now also imagine that there is a really strong spring between them and that you can not get rid of the spring. The only way to snap them togher is to be strong enough to compress the spring.

Imagine you have done all manner of tests on that spring and you know that it takes at least two really beefy guys to use all of their might to press the spring down so that the widgets can snap together. Now say some little kid comes up to you and says, “no problem, I can press it together with one hand.” Would you be skeptical?

In essence the Chemists are arguing that somehow they have made the spring (the electromagnetic force) go away, get weakened, or otherwise stop being an issue. I doubt very much that this is possible.
