re: #343 Mark Winter

My take is that gay people see the partner they want to marry exactly like heterosexual people see the partner they like to marry.

Just like Obama’s parents wouldn’t have wanted to settle for a civil union either back then.

But the federal government doesn’t make culture. Even if federal law specifies that the proposed “combination of resources contract” goes by the word “marriage”, and that all laws everywhere, state and local included, wherever the word “marriage” occurs, these new arrangements shall count, that won’t mean that everybody considers the group in question to be married-married.

There’s a split in our culture, and the traditionalist side is losing ground. It’s going to lose on the legal question, most likely, and two-man and two-woman marriages are going to count as marriage for all legal purposes. They will count, also, culturally, within the circle of the winners of this political contest. But the losers will not change their minds. They won’t come around, culturally. They will accept that they lost, that in a democracy, the majority wins, and that the new arrangements do in fact have the force of law.
