The perception has another darker aspect. Some thoughtless city folk like to look down on those southern and or back country types. The kind that actually hunt for the freezer by necessity, and have rifles or pistols for pest/varmint/wildlife control.

EDIT-Totally forgot to include- CCW and gun ownership crosses over in many peoples minds as far as gun culture perception goes.
