To Bagua and Reine:

First off, Fran, I absolutely understand and am sympathetic to your position given what the Roi does.

That said, everyone is misunderstanding the scope of the environmental impact at this point. When that mess starts washing up along the East coast in a few months it will be much different.

Whether we like it or not, we have to as a matter of necessity begin to ween ourselves from fossil fuels.

We should very much use this as the impetus to redirect our economy away from the destructive path we are on. Switching to other forms of power generation will not sink our economy as analysis after analysis from respectable economics departments has shown. We win economically, by replacing oil. Shutting everything down overnight is not the answer, but beginning to scale it back and replace it is.

Even if we did not win economically, the issue of national survival trumps dollars.

I wish more people would phrase the argument in this way.

I think it’s one of those topics that separates the reflexive right from the think right. If you can’t see the benefit to national security and our economy as a whole to shift away from Oil — environmental arguments be damned — there is something wrong, there.
