The Northrop YA-9 lost the competition against the A-10 back in the day. Why would anyone want the Russian copy? //// Seriously, all things considered, the survivability of the A-10 is much higher than the A-9 or it’s Sukhoi derivative (considered in some circles to have been a very successful espionage operation by the KGB).
I saw a Northrup YF-17 prototype last week in Alabama*.
Lost the light fighter competition to the F-16, but it’s essentially the basis for the F-18/A the Navy uses now.
* - In the same memorial park as the USS Alabama, USS Drum, and a SR-71. It’s there on loan from the Navy Aviation Museum.
