Socrates’ and Jesus’ are OK in writing because they’re classical or biblical. That’s pretty much the only valid exception. Otherwise, if you’re going to dinner at the house of your friend Jens, you’re going to Jens’s house.
Anyone who writes “Charles’” for “Charles’s” in the possessive is wrong. And as for pronunciation, if you actually say Charles instead of Charleses when trying to enunciate it as a possessive, you are excommunicated.
