You’re right that it wouldn’t do much good but I think encouraging people to give a “get out of outrage free pass” to their side is a mistake. It does nothing to increase the quality of discourse or the free exchange of ideas.
I’m not s Bill Maher fan but I did greatly enjoy the awkard silence from the audience and panel on this one

Context…including who’s saying it to what rhetorical end…matters.

Maher’s bit is horseshit because’s it about claiming that context doesn’t matter, and that it’s some kind of “gotcha” for people to react strongly to a quote presented in a deceptive context.

So basically, the exact opposite of what everyone arguing against #CancelColbert is saying.
