My Chinese students in Hunan, where chili peppers are a distinctive part of their cuisine, were surprised when I told them chilis originally came from Central America. I guess they figured they were native to China.
It is quite interesting where different foods and traditions developed.
One thing I know very little about at the moment is Chinese food history and culture. I grew up in the 1960’s and 1970’s when China was very isolated from the West. I have never fixed that deficit beyond eating at local Chinese restaurants. I will need to rectify that.
