It is technological change which is driving the current excesses. Capitalism never had loyalty to a nation. Once it no longer mattered where someone was physically located in order to provide services (except for those that still demand a physical presence such as nursing, etc), a company can shift its workforce anywhere and make a larger profit by paying lower wages and ignoring any safety protocols. Capitalism has always been and remains totally amoral with no concern for anyone other than the owners; see Donald Trump as a perfect example. If nations don’t impose rules that companies are forced to follow, the larger corporations will run roughshod over them.
That is a point I have long made. Capitalism is utterly amoral. It rewards hitmen and drug lords as surely as anything other enterprise that can produce a good people will pay for.
