Here’s the question though: If we were to theoretically abandon the EC and go straight popular vote, wouldn’t the Democratic candidate win most of the time?

It would take a constitutional amendment to abandon the EC.

But if we were to double the size of the House (last time it was increased was almost 100 years ago, when the nation’s population was 127 million) — then the distortion brought on by sparsely-populated states having the same number of senators as everyone else, would be much diminished. (also, add PR/VI and DC as 2 new states).
