We wouldn’t basically be in default, we’d be paying our bills under Constitutional authority. If the Republicans want to sue seeking an actual default they’re free to do so, but that would be political suicide on top of political suicide. It’s wouldn’t be a constitutional crisis and the Supremes aren’t going to rule the debt limit constitutional.

This is the Roberts court we’re talking about here. The only reason they ruled the ACA to be Constitutional is because Roberts didn’t agree with junking the entire law. They’d twist themselves into pretzels to find a way to declare the debt limit to be Constitutional.
