Wait a minute— piracy on the open sea isn’t a matter for the U.S. Navy?

If we give in to the pirates in any way, shape, or form, I see two things happening:
(a) a complete loss of ‘face’ for the country in the eyes of the world
(b) even more internal political polarization than we now have

If not, and the captain is a casualty:
(a) the captain becomes a national hero (rightly so)
(b) further attacks will cease on US flagged vessels for a long while.
