We had our first one as a surprise and we found out on our second one, just because (no cheesy “reveal party” or anything like that). My son was awesome, though, because my mother-in-law had, without our knowing it, knit him a hat before he was born… and she guessed the right gender. Well, “guessed” is the wrong word. She claims she “knew”. When you’ve had seven children and 20 grandchildren, I suppose she might be closer to knowing than guessing on grandchild #21.

Folks in my family who made things in advance of my son’s birth (we did not know until he was born) made things that were suitable for either sex. Thus he got a lot of green, yellow, &c. Kid probably didn’t see a single blue thing until he was about nine months old.
