Okay, every choice carries certain risks. The odds as you call them vary by study. Gun accidents happen. For all these things training and discipline keep you safe. Cars, guns, boats, power tools all carry risks. By the safety odds, I should buy rather than build furniture.

As I see it the trick is this-take a hard look at what you want your last resort self defense to be. Whatever you choose from a shotgun to actually relying exclusively on police, equip yourself as best you can. Good locks and some extra phone extensions would make sense for the pacifist. Choosing a gated community would be a great idea. When I give classes I push 3 things above all else-awareness, intelligence and training. Those are the things that will save you in a fire or a robbery.

Those that choose to fight just made a different choice about how far they would go for themselves or loved ones.

Actually I was on the pistol team in the army, thoroughly enjoy combat hand gunning courses and prefer a shotgun for home defense. That being said, shit happens. A daughter’s friend committed suicide with a family gun, there are accidents, guns are stolen, taken from those using them, etc, etc.

I can’t rightly consider the issue unless I deal with as many perspectives as possible.
