Closed primaries is one of the very few things I agree with conservative partisans on. It makes no sense at all to have open primaries where people with no connection to the party at all get to cast meaningful votes on who should be the party’s candidate.

There is an argument in political science that a person who votes in a primary is more likely to vote for that party’s nominee in the general election. That’s the idea behind letting independents vote in primaries. Here in California we’ve done away with partisan primaries for everything but president (and there’s yet another attempt to swing at that). Everyone is on the primary ballot regardless of party, top two go to the general election.

As to the rat fucking issue, for it to ever actually play a role, it would have to be Florida 2000 close.
