I have a friend who works as an engineer for the Maryland State Highway Administration. Some years back I was driving on a bridge over the Washington Beltway. I hit a joint that was badly misaligned and badly damaged a tire.

(Which flattened rather quickly. And, of course, it was pouring rain heavily at the time. I was able to pull into a shopping center parking lot in order to change the tire fortunately.)

So I mentioned the location to her as we all traveled that route quite often. She got that “Cool! We have a highway defect to kill!” glint in her eye. But the next time I saw her, she was all bummed out because it turned out to be a county road.

And then there was the time on US 22-30 just outside of Pittsburgh…
