Interest rates for most of the ‘safe’ and traditional investing insturments are complete and utter crap right about now.

I’m thinking along the lines of US Savings Bonds or Certificates of Deposit from FDIC-backed financial institutions. Try and find something that’s paying an APY higher than 2% right now…something that doesn’t require a 5 to 10 year commitment, at least.
