Now, lighting from below is unusual in photographing people and that is not what is done here. Rather, in post processing, and in layering this image, the lower left was moved to white and the upper right was turned black, with a gradient of brightness between the two extremes.

The image is created to give a feeling of foreboding. Mitt is mostly in the light - the darker hair makes him look younger than he is. But behind him is something sinister, with many limbs… black limbs.
