I had that very point thrown at me, that God created a ‘Mature’ universe 6000 years ago, like trees with all their rings, Adam as an adult, not an infant, etc. When I pointed out that that would have required God to create, in transit, light from the entire history of stars that had never existed (because they ignited, had their time, and burned out billions of years ago), he said, “Who are you to question God?”

An omnipotent creator could presumably have created the universe so that it looks old at any point in time —- e.g., 6000 years ago. Of course, creation of an old-looking universe 5 minutes ago is an equally valid option.

A creationist type who simply asserts that his/her faith trumps reason and the empirical evidence is irrelevant is at least not lying about what is and isn’t science. Creationists pretend it is science in order to get it into the schools.
