re: #406 Great White Snark

That’s not accidents. It’s a comment in response to comments about gun accidents. Sorry, that’s fair game in our discussions, no? Before you dismiss it via source, show me a link with contrary accident data from a neutral source. Or even HCI. Or whoever.

There is a reason I opened up the comment as I did. We in the sport work toward zero accidents. Never gonna get there, no more than any other human activity. Do you think it inappropriate to discuss accidents as accidents a moment? Why would that be? Crime is one thing. Suicide another. And accidents. As to skateboards etc, I think the problem is serious injuries are really common.

But if the accident rate has declined, and or is lower than what some may have thought, why is that not considered good news? Comments linking accidents keep coming up. Point and laugh or worse. At some point it’s fair to drop in a link to real numbers.

The reports you talk about are not hard to find. Get as mad as you want at the fact that sporting or safety organizations will point out how safety their sport is when properly run. Once a report is compiled, it’s fair game to cite and evaluate factually. Does the car industry publish reports on how cars are used in crimes? I have never seen that if so.

The comment you responded to also said this: ‘If anything proves the ‘ease’ of guns, there you go.’ That’s only partly about accidents. Yes, a low accident rate is good. Limiting discussions about guns to accidents is too common. First comment on a Page about gun safety some weeks ago was ‘Let’s eliminate suicides’ as part of the discussion.

To me a big part of any gun issue, including accidents, is the culture of guns we have in this country. Skateboards are surprisingly safe. So are bicycles. What’s dangerous is being a pedestrian. Let’s deal with the statistically significant safety issues whenever they come up. I’m not mad that hunters have a safe sport and publish reports that say so. There’s not an issue even out there about cars being used in crimes (other than being stolen themselves).

As for this:

Before you dismiss it via source, show me a link with contrary accident data from a neutral source.

I didn’t ‘dismiss it via source’. I dismissed it for the limited topic it covered, which is what you claim is the same thing I should do in entering the discussion. Nope. I’m bringing up suicide every time guns come up. Sorry notsorry.
