The video production is not the source of material anymore. One must be totally entrenched in the Star Trek franchise of products to understand.

The whole idea right now is to tie the movies and comics together, as a way to give fans a way to keep immersed in the universe in between the long waits between films. They’ve had everything in the comics so far from remakes of a few original series episodes (The Galileo Seven, Operation: Annihilate), a two-parter in the mirror universe, and even a post STID two-parter involving a run-in with a universe where all the crew are the same…except the genders are reversed.
