I’m taking advantage of my neighbors in dealing with this. The one cat always attempts to run out into the hall (and explore) when I leave the apartment in the morning. But they are afraid of people in the hall and will run back into the apartment when they appear.

So this morning when I was getting ready to leave I heard one of the neighbors leaving for work. So I opened the door. The cat ran out about six feet, saw the neighbor, stopped, did a 180 degree turn, and scuttled back into the apartment. I thing just walked out the door and went to work.

The neighbor is amused by the whole performance. And she has encountered the cats previously.
