I think “renege” is the classiest synonym.

Unfortunately, even that option is tainted by wingnut bumper sticker rhetoric.

Actually, I think that’s the best reason to use that particular synonym.

Saying “Jim Hoft is a dirty reneger!”, etc, is going to generate a specific set of allusions in the heads of certain people in Hoft’s target demo.
