re: #26 HappyWarrior

I mean we all have deeply held beliefs and that’s my problem with using religious beliefs as an excuse to not serve someone. Do conservatives really think they’d accept if I hypothetically owned a bar and I turned someone away wearing a cross and or Trump t-shirt? They’d be pissed so why on earth do they think they should have the right to deny a gay couple. I mean for a church I get it, but for someone selling a secular good like cake or flowers, your religious beleifs have nothing to do with it, oyu’re not a Christian baker, you’re a baker who happens to be a Christian not a Christian who happens to be a baker.

To follow up on this, the baker is running a business, and the operation and existence of that business rely on infrastructure and a legal system that are both provided by the state. In return, the state is entitled to expect the business to serve members of the public without indulging in invidious discrimination.

Allowing religious exceptions to anti-discrimination civil rights laws effectively makes these laws pointless.
