It would be tough to categorize Phelps as right-wing. He has the all too common right-wing hatred of gay people, or anyone different from them, but would a right-winger protest soldier’s funerals? I see him as just nuts.

To me wingnut ≠ right-wing; wingnut = bat guano crazy far-right fringe consumed by hatred. Like Geller, Phelps, etc. Maybe I need to revise my definition. Or maybe those people need their own special category. I dunno, somehow just plain old “crazy” doesn’t seem sufficient.
