Terrible moment. The Catholic high school I used to teach at hosts a group of Italian students every fall. When they leave, we have a mass and assembly to honor them.
First time I’m there, Father calls on everyone to raise their right arms in blessing of our Italian brethren and sistren.
The image of a gym full of bleachers with kids in uniform all raising their right arms in unison is unfortunate. Even though our kids are racially diverse, wearing chinos, and not particularly uniform arm-raisers.
It was probably even more disturbing to some of the Italians.
