I never really know if that’s a lack of understanding of economics or just some brutal lack of empathy, some “Well at least I’m better than them” feeling.

So much of this conversation is distorted by the lack of universal health care in this country. If we had universal health care, then Wal-mart’s practices would be far less— though still exploitative.

I think a reduction to the absurd is useful here: Would it be okay to employ people for just room and board, and make them shop at the Company Store?

The problem is I’m afraid a lot of the modern GOP Ayn Rand afficianadoes would say “Yes!” enthusiastically.
