There are pictures trotted out occasionally of President Reagan meeting with Mujahadeen leaders in the 1980s when they were fighting the Soviet forces in Afghanistan, President Bush walking hand in hand with the Saudi king and Rumsfeld glad-handing Saddam Hussein back during the Iraq-Iran war. They were not “sympathizing with terrorists”, they were carrying retail politics to the benefit of the United States at the time.

Republican Representative Pete King’s avowed support for the Maoist/Marxist IRA, on the other hand…

But those, at least, are known fact and part of the public record.

The ‘palling around with terrorists’ line was spun from equal parts crazed wingnut dreams and whole cloth.

And by Palin’s metric at the time, those instances most certainly would qualify as ‘palling around with terrorists’ - provided those were Democrats in those pictures and not Republicans.
