Probably some hippie stuff that he now hates.

His “hippie phase” consisted of hanging around North Beach trying to get into the Beatnik scene and meet a number of famous types that he could then extrapolate into some fame for himself.

Even his ex-wife said he was always concentrated on becoming famous—obsessed by it.
