Just fill out an application? The days of the paper application came and went. Very rare are the places these days that I find paper applications still being handed out and most of those are small businesses. If you’re running anything more complicated than a franchise, then all applications are done electronically.

Gone are the days of chatting up the manager as you filled out a few boxes, now you spend 30 minutes filling out one application and a long questionnaire, after which the data is sent to the home office in another state and ran through algorithms they tell you nothing about to decide if you’re worth hiring. Then you might get a callback for an interview at the shop you’re looking to get hired at.

It took me no joke a half hour to fill out an application for LIDS. Then I called the manager and he said that he’d be making decisions by Sunday. Really anyone who believes in the old myth of plucky little so and so wearing his best dress shirt and tie going up to the manager and just asking for a job lives in a delusional world. The same world where tax cuts for the wealthy benefit everyone.
