What’s particularly gruesome about the slaughtering procedures? Under Jewish law, the animal must be checked for disease before it is slaughtered - and the person doing the slaughtering must do so with one clean stroke of a knife to sever key arteries, veins, and other internal structures of the neck; failing to do so renders the animal unkosher. Following that procedure, the animal is again checked for disease that would render it unkosher.

To me, that’s far more humane than a system where the animal is stunned by gas, gun, or electrocution before it is slaughtered.
