What did they call those “company towns” in which the workers rented their homes from the employer and bought stuff on credit at the “employee store”. They would have their “charges” deducted from their paycheck and be left in debt at the end of the pay period.
This is the current state of most minimum-wage employees these days. Only the debtor is a hospital or Visa.
A lot of companies issue debit cards in lieu of a paycheck, with penalties attached if the user does not spend certain amounts at certain intervals.
