Heck. Just look at what the general acceptable public behaviors were in the 1960s regarding a whole lot of this stuff. The mores and behaviors of societies are constantly shifting and trying to stuff historical figures into 2010 moral sets is complete BS. (Same game as claiming Lincoln was racist that is made by the Neo-Confed apologists.)

That they claim Lincoln was a racist as a defense of the CSA I think is hilarious. Not exactly like Jefferson Davis and the CSA leadership were all about seeing beyond race and treated people by the content of their character. I actually do think Lincoln could have been a little better but A) I’m guilty of hindsight bias and B) I’ll take the word of a man like Frederick Douglass who lived during those times and knew many abolitionists and such who said that Lincoln was the only white man he felt treated him as an equal and Douglass was far from a Lincoln fanclub member. He criticized him often during Lincoln’s lifetime.
