He wouldn’t have done that. Sarah Palin was picked in large part to mollify James Dobson, who was threatening a revolt if McCain went with his first choice, Joe Lieberman. Mitt Romney was seen as far too moderate in the summer of 2008 to have placated Dobson. Had McCain chosen Romney, Dobson would have told his followers to sit out the election.

That outcome would not have been good, IMO. A GOP fracture of that kind would have made any barrier to Obama enacting his full agenda unlikely. And as a conservative, I believe that outcome would have been very bad.
