The early 80’s was when I think was the last time I ever heard it used as an epithet, and it wasn’t used much as an racist description even back then. So I can believe she didn’t know, but her apology sounds more like the usual right-wing “non-apology apology” than a sincere one. Someone really needs to give her a course on “sincerity.”
