Mundelein mayor’s July Fourth speech starts fireworks

Mundelein Mayor Steve Lentz gave a controversial Fourth of July speech in which he said America faced a moral crisis due to gay marriage and decades of “unwed mothers.”

Lentz has since defended his comments at a July Fourth ceremony at the Fort Hill Heritage Museum in Mundelein, in which he also remarked positively on Prohibition. He later posted on YouTube an audio recording of the statements, which he said he hoped would help clarify his intentions.

“I’m just going to address the elephant in the room, and that is not necessarily the Supreme Court decision (on gay marriage), ‘cause that’s just one event in a decadeslong adventure in a moral crisis that we’re in,” Lentz said in the speech. “Our nation is in a moral crisis, and it’s something that needs to be talked about more.”
