Otherwise they wouldn’t.

I mean, I’ll argue with you on this one. (Not a hill to die on, though.) There are an awful lot of people who, when pressed, will absolutely say, “I trust the officials God put in charge of us to use their spiritual discretion to enforce the law justly.” It goes back to the fetishization of authority that these people engage in; because all properly appointed authority is explicitly approved by God, it necessarily follows that they believe authorities should act in a Godly manner at all times, e.g. with compassion, kindness, and mercy. It’s why they look the other way when the cruelty of the Border Patrol is brought to light; they don’t want to admit that people in authority don’t always act in good Christian faith. It threatens their worldview that duly elected leaders and their appointed subordinates are God’s agents on earth.
