I suspect most of the wingnuts entire knowledge of firearms consists of, “The bang comes out of this end.” They probably skimp on range time and maintenance as well.

They certainly have no idea how ballistics actually work. I have seen ammosexuals declare with categorical certainty that you could not hit a target 250 yards away with a .45 pistol. It isn’t easy because of the extreme elevation required but it can be done and, more importantly, it is a consequence of the natural laws of motion.
