Bush’s speech should serve as an example to conservatives. There’s no need to oppose Obama’s volunteer programs. He’s not spreading communism, collectivism, fascism or starting his own personal army. He’s doing a good thing and there’s no reason to oppose it.

Volunteering is a good thing.

But I think volunteer-ism should be left to private organizations. If government wants to give grants to creditable private organizations, fine - as taxpayers, we can agree or disagree that is a good use of public funds.

But a govt run volunteer effort, or a legal mandate to do volunteer work - I say “no thanks” to that. To much opportunity for mis-use by whatever knucklehead is in charge of it. The govt has enough trouble keeping clean and focusing on more primary missions.
