While we scapegoat ‘the other’ for slavery, we’re not done with tribalism and racism. The United States, not distant, backward rednecks thousands of miles away, embraced slavery. We embraced slavery. Historically, blaming the South is scapegoating.

In the short term, it’s pretty obvious this Virginia governor is dog whistling. We should clarify the historical record and still be against this nonsense, if we all stay calm. No more flamewarring for me tonight.
